Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper singer. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and performer. Queen Latifah is a Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, as well as Rita who was a educator at Irvington High School. Latifah's parents divorced at the age of 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic high school located in Newark New Jersey. At the age of 8 Her cousin gifted her stage names Latifah which translates to tender and gentle in Arabic. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. She sang "Home" from The Wiz in the course of a show at her highschool. Latifah was part of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah was one of the members of the original form of Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the track. He signed Latifah and dropped her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
